Pigment spots are skin areas with a darker or lighter color compared to the surrounding skin. They are most often due to the accumulation or loss of melanin – the pigment that determines skin color. Their appearance can be related to sun exposure, hormonal changes, inflammatory processes, or aging.
There are different types of pigment spots – solar lentigines, melasma, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, etc. They can appear on both the face and the body. Although they are benign, they are often aesthetically concerning.
The diagnosis and treatment of pigment spots require an individual approach, including a dermatological examination and recommendation for suitable therapies – cosmetic, laser, chemical peels, etc.
